Cancellation of Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s 2020 Competitions

On Monday 13th July 2020 at 6:30 pm, Football Victoria announced that the Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s 2020 competitions have been cancelled. This includes Masters and Metropolitan Leagues.

Football Victoria is still hoping to run a shortened season for Junior teams and Miniroos – most likely an 8-week competition, where clubs will be asked if they would like to participate or not. Football Victoria will look at offering a modified or Cup competition for the senior teams – after they consult with the clubs.

The Watsonia Heights FC Executive Committee has discussed these changes and would like to convey to you (our members and supporters) that we are first and foremost a Community Club. As such, we firmly believe we exist to provide our community, the opportunity to be involved in a football club and participate in all things football. Whether it be as a player, supporter, administrator or coach – we’re here to provide the social outlet we all need to be exercising and socialising as a community.

We will support Football Victoria’s initiative to try and provide competitions for our members to participate in organised football matches/competitions.

If Football Victoria is unable to organise competitions for our teams, we as a club will invite the local like-minded clubs in our area to participate in friendly matches, gala days and cup competitions.

We are fortunate to have Gabonia Avenue Reserve available to use 12 months of the year and we’ll have Elder Street Reserve available to us until the 1st November – before the Greensborough Cricket Club take over for their domestic season.

Once the restrictions are lifted again by our State Government, we will invite all our teams back to training. This is important to our members and players, especially after being in lockdown, to be able to socialise and enjoy each other’s company after being deprived of such for so long. Our club will continue to maintain the strict hygiene regimen mandated by Football Victoria and by Sport & Recreation Victoria (SRV), in correlation with the latest Government advice.

As you know 2020 is our 50th year, the club being formed back in 1970. Since 2020 will no longer count as a full season, we will postpone our festivities until 2021. For our club, 2021 will now be our 50th season and we will celebrate accordingly.

On behalf of the whole Executive Committee, I would like to thank you all for your understanding and support during this interrupted and difficult season.

WHFC Executive Committee.
